Number of ISDS Registered Border Collies

The figure below show the Border Collies registered by the ISDS:
  • In each volume published.
  • As a function of the year of birth.
The line that shows the pups born in each year is smoother than the pups published in each year. Only in the last year the 'pups born' line dips because most pups born in that year will be published in next year's book, which has not been published yet.

Upto and including 1960 owners had to register only those dogs that they thought they would use for breeding. There was a separate chapter 'Litter Records' in the Stud Books that listed the total number of pups, including the non-registered ones. From 1961 onwards this 'Litter Record' was abolished and each dog had to be registered. That is why there is a strong increase in the number of registered dogs in 1961.

The outbreak of FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease) in 1967 had no influence on the number of pups born. But the 2001 epidemic coincides with a sharp decrease in the number of registered pups in the 2001 stud book.

The dip in 1977 coincides with the appointment of a new ISDS chairman and secretary after two years of organisational 'crisis' (according to Eric Halsall in his book 'Britisch Sheepdogs, being the history of The International Sheep Dog Society').
